Path to Net Zero

Our approach from the outset has been to minimise Nuthatch Retreat’s Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions, as detailed in our answers to all questions. We recognise there is more to do. Our planned investment in an EV for local business journeys and solar PV and battery storage will help us lower our business footprint further.

Scope 3 is more challenging, as guest travel is largely beyond our control and often represents the greatest share of our carbon footprint. We currently support guests who wish to travel by lower-impact means by offering:

  • EV charging at cost price

  • A secure bike shelter and local cycle hire recommendations

  • Clear signposting to train links, local bus routes, and the bookable Robin bus service (connecting to nearby forest sites)

  • Free transfers from the nearest station, where feasible

Recent meetings with the Growth Hub Net Zero team further underlined how transport remains one of the most pressing challenges for rural tourism businesses aiming for Net Zero. We will seek further advice from them around options for carbon offsetting our guests’ car journeys.

In 2024, Rod created a GWR-supported podcast episode showcasing a car-free family trip to the Forest of Dean. This project highlighted significant gaps in provision and deepened our understanding of the practical barriers to car-free tourism in the region. This reinforced our commitment to work with local government on potential solutions.

In recent conversations with the Forest of Dean District Council’s Net Zero team, we discussed options including:

  • EV car hire hubs

  • Bike racks on local buses

  • Tourism-friendly transport maps

  • A more tourism-focused bookable bus service

We aim to continue these conversations—with the council and our local MP—to explore these options and the possibility of extending bike paths from Lydney station to integrate with existing paths and improving connectivity across the area.
